Round 1 Player of the Week: Upson-Lee’s Niko Wells

Upson-Lee’s Niko Wells is joined by head coach Justin Elder for the presentation of GHSF Daily’s state Player of the Week award.

Not even Tom Brady has led a fourth-quarter comeback like that.

Upson-Lee trailed by 23 points with 11:42 left against Savannah Country Day in the Class 3A playoffs, needing three touchdowns and three two-point conversions to win.

Led by sophomore quarterback Niko Wells, the Knights got it done, prevailing 46-45.

Wells was 25-of-38 passing for a school-record 346 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown and threw three two-point conversion passes.

“I was so impressed with his composure throughout the game,” Upson-Lee coach Justin Elder said. “Even after he gave up a fumble for a scoop and score that gave Country Day their first lead, he stayed positive and kept doing his job.”

Wells is GHSF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by Sports Turf.
