Region champions’ preseason title odds
Spencer’s region title, the school’s first since joining the GHSA in 1968, was the most unlikely among the 64 winners this year, according to the computer Maxwell Ratings, which gave the Owls a 0.4% chance in preseason. Here are the 2022 region champions and their chances, which were calculated based on recent history, especially the 2021 season. Note that some teams with less than a 50% chance still were their region’s favorite, but their chances weren’t greater than their rivals’ combined.

Toughest schedules in each classification
These are the top 10 teams in each class ranked by strength of schedule as measured by the computer Maxwell Ratings. They don’t factor in out-of-state opponents, so a few teams such as Milton and Benedictine that have taken their lumps from outsiders aren’t getting full credit. The ratings, which allow for cross-class comparisons, reflect the typical strength of a team’s opponent. If Team A’s rating is 10 points higher than Team B, it means that A’s opponents on average would be favored by 10 points against B’s.

Championship picture for all 64 regions
Here’s a look at the region-title picture in all classifications. Thirty-nine regions have champions. Eighteen have what amount to region-championship games this week. Seven have games this week in which one team can clinch the title while the other (listed in parentheses) might claim the title with a victory but would need help from region tiebreakers. One region (6-4A) has a three-way tie for first place with none of the frontrunners playing another this week and will be decided by a points-differential tiebreaker if all three win.
