Douglass, Kell win opening games of 2024
Douglass and Kell opened the 2024 football season with victories Wednesday in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic at Kell High.
Douglass, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, beat Class 3A’s No. 3 team, LaGrange, 18-3. Douglass held LaGrange to 133 total yards with the aid of five sacks. Elijah Hunter intercepted two passes. Douglass scored all its points in the second quarter.
LaGrange is the highest-ranked opponent that Douglass has beaten since a Jamal Lewis-led Astros team defeated No. 1 Southwest DeKalb and Quincy Carter in 1995.
Kell beat North Atlanta 29-15 in the nightcap. Moonie Gipson rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and the Longhorns broke loose from a 15-15 game in the third quarter. North Atlanta lost two fumbles inside Kell’s 10-yard line.
