Johns Creek’s Helmerich takes job at Peachtree Ridge

Matt Helmerich resigned Friday as Johns Creek’s football coach to take the same position at Peachtree Ridge.

Helmerich announces his departure from Johns Creek over Twitter on Friday morning.

Helmerich’s Johns Creek record was 35-20 in five seasons, with region titles in 2018 and 2019. His 2021 team reached the Class 6A quarterfinals, the best finish in school history. Johns Creek, a Fulton County school, opened in 2009.

Peachtree Ridge, a Region 8-7A school, has had losing records each of the past five seasons and was 3-7 in 2021. The Lions won a state title in 2006 with future NFL player Cameron Heyward.

Helmerich had been a head coach at Fort Pierce in Florida and was the defensive coordinator at Florida’s St. Thomas Aquinas from 2010 to 2015, during which Aquinas won four state titles and one mythical national championship and produced 101 college signees.
