Valwood ends John Milledge Academy’s 62-game winning streak
The longest winning streak in state history and the longest active streak in the country came to end Thursday night when Valwood defeated John Milledge Academy 42-21 in the GIAA Class 3A championship game at Mercer’s Five Star Stadium in Macon.
John Milledge (12-1) had won 62 consecutive games, and four straight state championships, since a 48-0 loss to Frederica Academy on Nov. 30, 2018, in the GISA Class 3A final. Since then, John Milledge had played Valwood four times, winning all four by an average of 47.5 points.
Valwood, in its first season under head coach Brad Wells, won its first state title since 2017 and capped off an 11-1 season.
The game was tied 21-21 late in the third quarter until a 65-yard touchdown run by Tayt Snellgrove gave the Valiants a 28-21 lead. Valwood put the game away in the fourth quarter with touchdowns by Triston White (5-yard run) and De’Mar Riley (32-yard pass from Snellgrove).
The other three GIAA championship games will be played Friday in Macon. Flint River Academy will take on Robert Toombs Christian in the Class A final at 2 p.m., followed by the Class 2A game between Edmund Burke Academy and Gatewood at 5 and the 4A game between First Presbyterian and Brookstone at 8.
