Today's concussion could be tomorrow's dementia

It seems strange to think about dementia when talking about teenage athletes. But players who sustain concussions – even just a single concussion – are at a much higher risk for developing dementia later in life.

Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. While we are all at risk of experiencing dementia in old age, research shows that a single head injury is associated with an increased risk of dementia. In fact, people with two or more head injuries may face double the risk of dementia later in life.

However, there is hope, even for those who have had multiple concussions. Clinical research suggests that the Aviv Medical Program can heal injured brain tissue in both children and adults with post-concussion syndrome – even years after the injury.

If your teen has sustained one or more concussions and you’re concerned about their future, contact Aviv Clinics for a free physician consultation or call us at 888-393-2848.
