Quarterfinal Player of the Week: Douglas County’s James Johnson

Douglas County’s James Johnson is joined by head coach Johnny White for the presentation of GHSF Daily’s state Player of the Week award.

Douglas County coach Johnny White was having fun on his Facebook page this weekend talking about star junior wide receiver/defensive back James Johnson.

“I’m tired of saying it. Men lie. Women lie. Numbers don’t,” White posted. The coach was referring to Johnson's season statistics, but the player's most recent game also made the point.

In a 59-45 victory over Lee County in the Class 6A quarterfinals, Johnson rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns on five carries, had 55 yards receiving and a touchdown on three catches, returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown, led the team with 13 total tackles, had two tackles for losses and returned a kickoff 40 yards.

Johnson is a busy four-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball, track) who rarely attended recruiting events in the offseason and has only one rating (three stars by On3), but Florida State, Georgia and Ole Miss are now pursuing.

“He’s smart,” White said. “He’s elusive and strong for his size. His speed is great for his size. He’s the total package.”

Johnson is GHSF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by Sports Turf.
