Semifinal Player of the Week: Carrollton’s Bryce Hicks

Coming off a five-touchdown game in the quarterfinals, Bryce Hicks was hard pressed to top it last week. The Carrollton running back did what he could, rushing for a career-high 205 yards on 37 carries and throwing a 9-yard touchdown pass in a 35-27 victory over second-ranked Colquitt County in the Class 7A semifinals.

Carrollton’s Bryce Hicks (center) received his GHSF Daily state Player of the Week plaque at his school Wednesday. He was joined by (from left) GHSF Daily’s Ted Langford, principal Ian Lyle, head coach Joey King, Sports Turf’s Craig Musselwhite, Breylan Hicks (Bryce’s father) and athletic director Paul Fitz-Simons.

With no score in the game, Carrollton gambled on a fourth-and-1 at its 20-yard line in the first quarter, and Hicks delivered a 33-yard run in what would become a 99-yard touchdown drive. Hicks’ TD pass in the third quarter gave Carrollton a 28-17 lead.

Hicks, a junior, is over 2,000 yards from scrimmage this season – 1,573 rushing, 561 receiving – and has scored 30 touchdowns, including 11 in four playoff games, for a 14-0 team playing Mill Creek on Saturday for the 7A championship.

Hicks is GHSF Daily’s state Player of the Week. The award, sponsored by Sports Turf, will be presented to him Wednesday at his school.
