Week 2 Team of the Week: Jenkins County

In 2017, Charley Waters led his alma mater, Jenkins County, to its first playoff victory in 57 years. But almost two years later, the coach needed a break and stepped down.

In 2022, the job came open again, and Waters got the chance to resume his unfinished work. He led the Eagles to their first winning season since 2017 and their first victory over a ranked team, ECI, since 2000.

Head coach Charley Waters (left) and Jenkins County senior players accepted the Week 2 state Team of the Week plaque from GHSF Daily and BSN Sports representative Greg Olliff (right) on Monday at their school.

Now this season, Jenkins County is moving up again. The team’s 28-26 victory over then-No. 6 Johnson County in a Class A Division II game Friday was a second top-10 win this century and put the Eagles in the top 10 for the first time since 1999.

Jenkins County is GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Titan Electric.
