Second-round preview: Classes A Division II and 3A-A private
Three games matching top-10 opponents and three rematches from the regular season headline the second-round schedule in Class A Division II and the 3A-A private playoffs this weekend. The top-10 battles are No. 2 Bowdon at No. 9 Metter in A Division II and No. 8 Lovett at No. 3 Hebron Christian and No. 9 Wesleyan at No. 10 Christian Heritage in 3A-A private.
Second-round preview: Classes 2A and A Division I
Four games matching ranked opponents highlight the second-round schedule in Class 2A and Class A Division I this weekend. In Class 2A, No. 10 Thomson travels to No. 6 Hapeville Charter and No. 9 Carver of Atlanta visits No. 4 Appling County. The Class A Division I games include No. 10 Dodge County at No. 6 Worth County and No. 7 Commerce at top-ranked Toombs County.

A couple of Class 3A rematches from the regular season will be among the high-profile games this weekend in the second round of the GHSA playoffs. Top-seeded Jefferson will try to avenge a 32-30 loss to Oconee County in the teams’ regular-season finale on Nov. 1. Sandy Creek will seek to beat LaGrange for the second time this season after winning 27-7 on Aug. 30.

The GHSA playoffs begin this weekend with 119 games across the state to be played Friday and Saturday in the first of five postseason rounds. Among the high-profile matchups are Camden County at North Cobb and Mill Creek at Douglas County, with the winners to square off in the second round.

It’s makeup week in Georgia high school football. Forty-eight games Friday and Saturday will close out the regular season. The GHSA hopes to have playoff draws posted by 8 p.m. Saturday. This week wasn’t on the original schedule, but the GHSA added it to accommodate dozens of games still un-played from Hurricane Helene storm damage.

Region titles will be up for grabs in games across the state in Week 12, and one of those will match two No. 1-ranked teams fighting for the championship in Region 3-A Division I. Toombs County is No. 1 in Class A Division I, while Savannah Christian is the top-ranked team in the Class 3A-A private division.

Champions will be crowned Friday night in Region 3-6A when Hillgrove travels to Harrison and in Region 4-5A when Woodward Academy plays at Decatur. But those aren’t the only regions in which a champion could be decided in Week 10. Other teams that can clinch include Athens Academy, Cherokee Bluff, Christian Heritage, North Gwinnett and Peach County.

The winner of the Telfair County-Wheeler County game will be on course for a historic region championship. Telfair County last won a region title in 1993. Wheeler County, which opened in 1966, has never won a region title. In other Week 10 games, Cartersville meets Cedartown, Sumter County faces Carver of Columbus, and Lakeside of Evans takes on Brunswick in games that almost certainly will decide region championships.

First place will be at stake in several regions around the state this weekend. Notably, two games with front-runner status on the line match undefeated teams – Coffee at Lee County in Region 2-5A and Eastside at North Oconee in Region 8-4A. Elsewhere, the public-private battle for seeding in the lower classes wages on as North Cobb Christian meets Rockmart for first place in Region 7-2A.

Collins Hill and Buford will face off to determine the team to beat in Region 8-6A, and several games across the state will establish region front-runners.

Among the games on the schedule are two big Region 1-6A openers, Camden County at Valdosta and Lowndes at Colquitt County. Region 2-5A kicks off league play with No. 3 Thomas County Central at No. 2 Lee County, and private-schools powers Blessed Trinity and Savannah Christian meet in a non-region game.

Region play is picking up steam as the season reaches the midway point, and the early front-runners in several regions will be established this weekend. Among those are 4-3A (Aquinas at Westside of Augusta), 8-A Division I (Athens Academy at Commerce), 5-3A (Douglass at Cedar Grove), 4-4A (Mays at Creekside) and 5-6A (North Cobb at Walton).

Jones County will meet Ola and Rockmart will face Ringgold in early battles for region supremacy in Week 4 of the season. Warner Robins will take on Houston County for the unofficial title of county champions, and North Gwinnett travels to Mill Creek in a battle of top-five teams in Class 6A.

The Week 3 schedule also features high-profile games matching top-10 private schools when Blessed Trinity travels to Prince Avenue Christian and Marist visits Woodward Academy.

A week after knocking off Buford, Class 5A No. 1 Milton will travel to Florida to face American Heritage in a matchup of teams ranked in the top 20 nationally.
