How do shoulder dislocations occur and what are the symptoms?

Youth athletes who play contact sports like football are at risk for shoulder dislocation. This injury occurs when the arm or shoulder is pulled to the side or behind the athlete, or when falling on the shoulder or an outstretched hand.

Following the injury, athletes may experience sudden severe shoulder pain, and could feel a pop or the shoulder move out of place.

If your athlete’s shoulder becomes dislocated, they should seek medical attention immediately. Sometimes, the shoulder can move back into place spontaneously, but other times it may require an athletic trainer, orthopedic physician, or emergency room physician to reduce it and perform x-rays. The arm may be put into a sling, and a treatment plan by the athlete’s provider will be outlined, and often including physical therapy and a gradual return-to-sport plan.
