Quarterfinal Player of the Week: Coffee’s Tyrese Woodgett

Upon further review, it was great blocking, speed and acceleration that best explained Tyrese Woodgett’s 605-yard rushing performance Friday. It set the single-game Georgia record in Coffee’s 72-48 victory over Sequoyah in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

Woodgett's eight longest runs, seven for touchdowns, were captured on this video compiled by Recruit Georgia’s David Ewalt.

The previous record was held by Devyn Collins of Pepperell, who rushed for 485 yards against Rockmart in 2014.

Woodgett – a 5-foot-9, 185-pound player nicknamed Tank – scored on runs of 63, 80, 70, 80, 56, 53 and 50 yards. He has rushed for 2,090 yards this season despite missing a midseason game because of injury.

“He’s just worked very hard every day since coming back from injury,” Coffee coach Mike Coe said. “His patience has improved, setting up his blocks and not guessing, and then he has God-given speed that allows him to finish.”

Woodgett, who committed to Georgia Military College last month, is GHSF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award is sponsored by Sports Turf.
