Week 4 Team of the Week: Toombs County

Toombs County was the preseason No. 1 team in Class A Division I in multiple human polls, including GHSF Daily’s. The Bulldogs’ only losses last season were to Class 2A finalists Pierce County and Rockmart. Now, Toombs is one class lower while returning QB T.J. Stanley and DB/WR Lagonza Hayward, their two most prominent players.

If Toombs wasn’t Division I’s team to beat before, now factor a 33-29 victory at Rome last week. It was Toombs’ first victory ever against a top-10 team from a higher class.

Stetson Smith and Blake Smith of BSN Sports join Toombs County head coach Buddy Martin and the team's seniors as the Bulldogs were presented with the GHSF Daily Team of The Week award in Lyons.

Toombs coach Buddy Martin isn’t too worried about those predictions, though.

“One of the special things about this group is there are no expectations on them that they don’t have on themselves,” Martin said. “I’ve had to pull some in to talk with them about their expectations and how they relay that to their teammates because we’ve got some who have extremely high expectations. So we’re going to focus on where our feet are planted and try to be in the moment.”

Toombs County is GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Georgia Construction Careers.
