When can teen athletes return to sports after an ACL injury?

Teens who have had to sit on the sidelines while healing are often eager to get back to their sport, but it’s critical that these athletes don’t return too soon.

At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the athlete’s recovery is not based on time after surgery alone – we use objective data and coordinated care to ensure a safe and strong return is possible. Six months after ACL surgery, the athlete should undergo Functional Testing to determine if the athlete is ready to return by assessing:

  1. Knee range of motion

  2. Hip and thigh muscle strength

  3. Balance

  4. Hop testing

  5. Landing and cutting mechanics

  6. Psychological readiness

After the testing is complete, athletes will review the results with their surgeon to determine if they are ready to begin a return-to-sport plan.
